It helps to remember what a comment is doing for you when it stays open. In a shared draft, not every note is a request for immediate change. Some are placeholders that keep good thinking from getting lost while the draft keeps moving.

What a comment can safely hold for later

A comment can store alternatives you want to reconsider after structure locks. It can capture small wording ideas that are real improvements but not time-sensitive. It can mark a question that depends on information arriving from another team. It can flag a risk or dependency you plan to check during final review. By keeping these in comments, you retain the value without interrupting the pass you are on.

Consider a chapter where someone suggests swapping two adjectives for tone. You like the direction, but voice choices will be finalized after sign-off on claims. That note can remain open while you settle the substance. The suggestion is preserved, and the draft can progress toward the next milestone.

The same goes for verification items. A reviewer might add “confirm this number with Finance” or “replace this placeholder with the final chart.” Those are important, yet they hinge on inputs that arrive later. Keeping them in comments holds the reminder close to the line it affects, without forcing you to switch contexts during a structural pass. When the inputs land, the thread is right where you need it.

When reviewer context changes

Sometimes a reviewer moves to a different role or leaves the project. Their notes may still contain useful perspective, yet no one expects you to pause the draft until those preferences are adjudicated. Leaving the comments open keeps their ideas available without converting them into immediate tasks. If another reviewer later adopts one of those points as a requirement, you still have the record.

A related case: a stakeholder adds color on audience tone, then hands ownership to a new approver. You can keep those tone notes visible while the new approver decides which to carry forward. The preserved thread protects the original thinking without freezing the work in place.

Open comments are a memory. They protect ideas, questions, and checks from being forgotten. They are not, by default, a decision you must implement now. Treating them as preserved feedback lets you keep momentum on the choices that are actually in scope today, and return to the stored items at the right stage. You can scan those threads when you reach the polish or verification pass and act on the ones that now belong to the decision at hand, while others continue to wait without cost.
